what can i use on the ground of the brooder? i was gonna use wood shavings then i found out that the ducklings can eat wood shavings and it is dangerous so what else can i use? i also found out that i shouldnt use a flat surface for some reason

Flat surface is fine, but you don't want it to be smooth, because if the chicks can't get a good grip they can injure themselves. You can use wood chips just fine. For the first day or two, I put a towel down over the top to keep them from pecking at the wood chips, and because it seems like it would feel better on their newborn feet. You can also use straw, or any number of other things. But don't use newspaper--too smooth!

The mesh shelf/drawer liner that you buy in rolls works great for a sound footing. It's washable so it cleans up well, too.
