I have a heat plate from rent a coop, it stands on four adjustable plastic legs with a pyramid on top.
How high do you usually start the plate? I put it on the lowest height setting, they all ran under, how do I know if it’s too low?

I feel like it’s about as high as their back if they’re laying down, maybe a little higher. The instructions say look for chicks standing and laying, acting normally, I can’t see them so we’ll, I can’t tell where 1 ends and the next begins, they aren’t chirping, which seems like they’re happy. Some came out and ate and drank.

I would check on them once in a while but if they aren’t peeping like crazy and they seem happy, I think the height is good! 🙂 I have something similar and it’s best to experiment with different heights while watching your chicks behaviour. Hope this helps!:D

Ok thanks, the ones around the edges that I can see seem fine. My fear is lifting the heater and finding dead chicks in the center. But I don’t want to lift it yet since they’ve just gone in and I want them to be warm.

It sounds like they're happy. 🙂 I like to tilt mine a little (one side a little lower than the other) so that they can find what's most comfortable for them. My chicks moved spots periodically, so I assume that worked for them.
