I'm going to brood my first batch of chicks in my coop and am using a 4 bulb light. Do I need to put a white light in it or can I use 4 red bulbs so they know when its night and day or do they need the white light to be attracted to the heat? The coop has a east facing window and gets light quickly in the morning. The light has a thermastat on it and two bulbs turn off when the heat gets to a certain temp. I have been testing it and it seems to be consitant on the temp through the night.

Red light keeps them from pecking at each other. I learned that my babies liked the temps a little cooler than what I was taught to keep them week by week. Just make sure they can get away from the heat if they want.

OK thanks. Plenty of room and hopfully will do well. Wasn't sure about the light.

Hopefully your brooder will be large enough for your chicks to move away from under the lights when they are too warm. We found the red light to be more calming than the around the clock white light. Best of luck with your new flock!
