Brooder Size

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.

Welcome! I use largest kid pool menards sells for brooder. I built my coop in a weekend. The space per chicken has been covered. however, it depends how you are using your coop. My girls lay, eat and sleep in the coop. I have 35 chickens. I do not have a 12x12 coop. I DO have tons of roosting space so they can sleep properly. Mine free range sun up to Sun down and come in and roost. There is no coop floor time for them. Build your coop for your flock 👍… make it bigger than chickens you want to own… you will buy more.

HI. I have a shed that 8' x 8' would that work as a brooder

Welcome!
After your chicks are a few weeks old, you may see some you don't want to keep... and even sexed pullet orders result in some cockerels.

So, if you can prune those numbers down to 16, before they are half grown, you would have the 4 sq ft per adult bird that's needed in the coop.

Besides, 35 is a LOT of chooks to deal with when you're just getting started. They will eat a lot, and produce more eggs than you can keep organized (ergh, our counter space!)
Craigslist and local FB chicken groups work well for rehoming.

That way you don't have to buy a new shed, and you can work on making the one you have into a nice coop! If you post pictures of it over in the "Coops" section of the forum, a lot of clever people can help you out with design and modifications to make it great.
