brooder space per chick

Is there a guideline for brooder size per chick? I'm trying to decide what will be best for the brooder. Also, how low can the light hang?

I like using a bathtub as a brooder, it is perfect for 25 chicks for two weeks.

If you are using a heat lamp remember that they are very hot, and so they are also a fire hazard.

I hang it high enough so there is no risk of a baby chick hitting it, even if they jump.

Watch the comfort level of the chicks. If they huddle under the lamp they are too cold, if no one goes near the lamp, it is too hot.

Good reminder about the light. I didn't think about using the tub. Last year I raised four little ones from day two with great success, but this year I am raising possibly more tham 30. However, it is my first hatch. I'm on the upper Gulf coast of Florida, so moving them outside when they feather out will be easier at this time of year than it is for my northern neighbors. I wonder how hubby will feel about using the tub...
