brooder temp adjusting

I have week old chicks. I am using a 250w red bulb, the temp has been 93-99 depending on the time of day. How does one adjust the temp to decrease each week as they get older?? 10deg. lower per wk is about right?? Is there a thermostat or timer I should use? They are in a bathroom so there is not much for me to clip the light onto to raise it in increments. Now it is clipped to the vanity drawer which is slid open.

Maybe you need a lower wattage bulb? My 250 bulb made it too hot, the heat lamp was already way above the brooder. Lower wattage bulb gave me more adjustment room. You just have to raise the bulb a few inches each week to adjust temp. I think it's 90-95 degrees the first week and then 5 degrees lower each week after, until they have all their feathers.

Maybe you could change the angle so more heat is deflected away rather than directed straight at the chicks? If you can't move the light you could always switch out the bulbs for lower watt bulbs each week. I know the pet store we bought ours at also had 125w, 100w and 50w red bulbs.
