brooder too cool?

I can NOT seem to get my brooder past 85 degrees... I've had chicks before, but always used the heat lamp. Wanted to try something gentler on them. I get my chicks tomorrow. Do you think 85 will be fine for them?

You aren't trying to warm the cave or even a part of the brooder. The chicks will warm themselves by snuggling up against the heating pad. If it's warm to the touch, it's warm enough for chicks.

You should move it away from the back of the brooder so that chicks don't get trapped in the back and unable to find their way out.
