Broodies abandoning nest?

One of my Buff Orps has gone broody and seems to be in it for the long haul. However, I've had several hens get a clutch and start to set only to give up after a day or so! What could be causing this sporadic broodiness?

I think that it is hormonal.... Are they really young hens? Maybe they need to mature more?
I dont really have an answer for you-- except to say that my hen that just hatched out 4 chicks-- did not start out as the broody-- my Broody sat tight on the clutch (thru 2 moves) for 2 weeks and this hen came in the last week one day when the other one left for her AM constitutionals and took over!
I think that the whole Broody thing is quite mysterious!

Could be. They're around two yr. old and I know that they're capable of producing chicks. Just wanted to see if they'd hatch em on their own this time!
