Broodiest breed

silkies and cochins are widely considered to be the best broodies, sometimes silkies are broody more than they even lay eggs!

I have had many other breeds go broody, including Marans, Wyandotte, Faverolles, and Welsummer. basically as long as you don't get production bred hatchery hens who have had the broodiness bred out of them systematically, they may go broody from time to time.

this chart lists a lot of breeds with their likelihood of broodiness:

I have a silkie who goes broody most often but can't cover a full dozen eggs.

I also have three salmon faverolles who are super quiet even though these had no human contact other than filling feed dishes till they were 11 weeks. They also go broody on a regular basis and while not quite as bad as the silkie are a quite large bird and would be able to hatch a much larger set of eggs.
