Hi, need advice... This is our first hen that has gone brooding, the only problem is that she made her nest in the garage/barn in a box of nails and screws. Have no clue why she did this as we have perfectly good coop with nice nests. Should we just leave her or move her and her eggs? Advice and/or suggestions welcome....
Thanks

How many eggs does she have? If you intend to hatch the eggs presuming you have a rooster that has fertilised them? you will want to move her to the nest box asap and block her in with some food/water and see if she sits, if not then next time just keep a closer eye on her to prevent it happening again, if you do not intend to hatch just remove her and the eggs and break her out of her broody state by placing her in a broody cage.

! Great to have you aboard! A broody will sometimes isolate herself...I agree with what the poster above stated. Good luck to you!

I would think the nails and screws would break the eggs, so I would try to move her.

If your are worried about moving her and that area is a safe place why not just place some padding below her at night. Put some straw or pine savings in there. Its up to you.

Well, just thought I would give an update on my hen that laid in the garage/barn in a box of screws and nails. Well I don't have a Brooding cage so I used and old wire rabbit cage which is pretty good size and put shavings and hay in the bottom. I held her while Wes (my husband) moved the 10 eggs to the cage. Then we poured out the screws and nails into another container and put shavings into that one and put the eggs in it and placed inside the wire rabbit cage. Then I placed the mama in container. Oh by the way, we did this at night as suggested by someone and we put the rabbit cage right where the container originally was. Put water and food inside cage and shut the door. The next morning she was still sitting on the nest so I opened the cage door. To my knowledge she never moved for 2 days however, then she started getting off the nest and even taking her a good walk around the yard, eating and drinking then goes back to her eggs. I guess we will just have to wait and see if they hatch. Oh someone asked if we have a rooster and yes we do, so I guess they are probably fertilized. This is our 1st go round so its all new to us. Thanks for everyone's input and suggestions.
