Brooding on Nothing/Inducing Broodiness

2 questions here:

1) Will hens occasionally go broody on nothing? Does this mean they're going to make a nest there? I had a hen doing most broody behaviors that I've seen with her breed, but she didn't have an egg under her.

2) Are there anyways to induce broodiness? Or do I just have to wait for it to possibly ever happen?

All broody hens will sit on nothing. You cannot bring on, or make a hen go broody, though other broody hens seem to sometimes trigger those that are predisposed. In many breeds the instinct has been bred out of.
