1. When can I use wood shavings? As soon as you are sure they are eating from the dish and not the floor usually a few days old.
2. When can I give meal worms? Meal worms should be given as a treat no more then 2-3 times per week after age of 5 weeks and 4-5 small worms per bird. They are fattening.
3. What other stuff can i get em? Do you mean to eat or décor for the cage? any fresh chopped veggies and fruit except the seed and skin of apples and avocado and chocolate. Mine love the flowers off of broccoli and cooked carrot and peas, corn too. Even chopped fresh spinach. And don't forget eggs, chicken or quail hard boiled and smashed shell and all.
Enjoy your birds!

My little quail have an aquarium with a cardboard box I painted brown and painted vines up the side and some plastic plants and forest like decor that I used to use for my fish before they got huge.

With bedding and babies added.
I used fine pine shavings. I showed them where the food was and dipped their beaks in water when I first put them in. They love running in and out of the fake log and stump and they hide under the plants. I give their parents mealworms and grass and fruits they had a piece of strawberry yesterday, once or twice a week . some will eat millet sprays. My current pair hasn't figured them out yet. ...Lol

Halloweengirl13 I love the general idea of your cage but wish they were in a wire sided cage for air circulation. The ammonia in the poo can add up quickly and hurt the lungs and throats of the birds. Try a wire finch cage or even a hamster or rabbit cage just place something solid on the floor for them to walk on.

All my cages have either chicks, Rabbits or older quail in them currently, I make do with what I have on hand. I have been using aquariums for various animals for 15 years and don't worry I know the issues with it. Right now I only have 4 button chicks in there and as long as I keep it clean ammonia is not a problem, no worse than the screen lidded wooden and plastic bins a lot of people use for little chicks if properly maintained. When they are older they will be in a cage like their parents, but for now the aquarium is the only option.
