I have two sets of chicks that are all the same age - 4 weeks old. 5 were hatched and raised by me in a brooder in the house, and 3 were hatched and raised by a broody with the flock. I'll be getting rid of the males soon - 2 of mine and 2 of the broody's, by the looks of it - and I want to try to integrate my 3 females with the broody and her one female. I've already taken the 5 brooder chicks outside and the flock seems to accept them just fine. The broody is very interested in them, calls them over and gives them food. They've been hanging out together in the afternoon for several days now. So that part is going well. However, I haven't seen them try to go under her yet. Maybe they just haven't gotten that close yet, or maybe they don't know to do that..? They were raised with a MHP so they do know to go under something for heat, and they do try to snuggle in my armpit when I sit with them outside and they get cold. They aren't fully feathered yet. Will they eventually figure it out and go under her for heat? Or is it too late at this point? I'm afraid to leave them outside for long periods of time, but I want to see if I can avoid having to set up the MHP in the coop.

Here they are, all hanging out together. My chicks are the scrappy looking ones not done feathering out. The broody's chicks are almost completely feathered, except for their heads (but they do still go under her periodically, even on 70-degree days).

Just leave them with her. She'll take care of them.
That's great she so readily accepted them.

That’s very encouraging, thanks! They haven’t been inside the coop yet though. Just in the run in the afternoons. Should I start deliberately bringing them into the coop to get them used to the space? Not sure if or when they’d follow her there. They seem to like being around her, but they don’t follow her the way her chicks do. Will that come with time, too?

Oh my, your hen is BEAUTIFUL!

I'd carry on what you are doing but hang around watching them. If you put them in at night they may well all huddle up together and by morning will have properly integrated. Watch carefully of course and be ready to step in.

What a heart-warming sight! :love
The little cockerel raised by the broody is trying to scare the brooder chicks away from her.

I would just put them under her at night, so they will spend the whole night under her and in the morning know where to go for warmth, protection and comfort. They already react to her encouraging sounds regarding food.

The broody has two boys and one girl, and the two boys are both acting horrible towards my chicks. Peck them mercilessly and aim to pluck feathers, not just peck. I’ll be getting rid of them very soon, as they’re messing up my integration plans.

I have the same question--my broody hatched 5 chicks 5 days ago and I just ordered 3 day old chicks due to arrive in a week (with hopes that mom will take the new ones in to raise). Do you all think it will be ok to just slip them into the coop with mom at night when they arrive? It would be 5 chicks almost 2 weeks old, adding in 3 day olds. I don't want to set up a separate brooder for the newbies if at all possible. Do you think mom will accept the littler ones ok?
