We have the following breeds of chickens

Polish
Hambug SS
Lav Orphingtons
Ayam Cemani
Barred Rock
RIR
Easter Eggers and a couple Xs

In addition we have Runner Ducks, and Wild Eastern and Royal Palm turkey's.

We have nesting boxes, and breeds are separated, We are getting more and more eggs every day, most hens are coming into 6-12 months old. Is there any breed that will be more broody than others, is there and age where the go broody. So far none seem very interested in sitting on their eggs. We have a large incubator and so no issue with the hatching. But the kids, wife and I think it would be really neat to allow one or two hens to hatch themselves. Anything we need to know? Are the turkeys or ducks likely to sit?

We are planning on building more coops next year and relocate the birds from the barn to accommodate additional livestock so if there are breed we don't have that tent to hatch please feel free to throw out suggestions.

Thanks

Your Lavender Orphingtons are much more likely to go broody than any of your other hens. Your Easter Eggers and Rhode Island Reds are the second most likely. Of course, all hens are unique. At the rate your hens are laying, it won't be long before a hen goes broody. Just let some fertilized eggs accumulate and it's bound to happen.

If you're really interested in watching a broody at work, get s couple silkies! I've got a girl who's about 8months old who's in a state of perpetual broodiness. She'll sit on anything even vaguely egg shaped!
