Heya all -

My call duck has gone broody. This is her first year laying, and I figured she was done laying for the season, since it got really hot and she moulted - but then she laid a few more eggs (in the doghouse) and then no eggs. Found her yesterday (after she spent the night outside the pen cause she never came in for bedtime) and she is sitting on 7 eggs (In the Calf pen!!!).

ok, Q's...

Is anyone else's call ducks still laying this late?

Should I not worry so much about her being out there (I am rather worried about predators)? She is well hidden, and the calf pen is in the middle of the donkey pasture, so surrounded by predator stompers

I think she could probably get away from anything that came at her.

She has other "safeguards" around her, tight fence - not wide spaces, I mean- but the other side is mostly open into the pen with just a red metal cattle gate across it - to keep the calves from stepping on her and her nest. I put the gate across the corner because we got a new calf last night and where was the first place he went? yep - almost stepped on her.

This is only her third day to set on the eggs, and I noticed she leaves the nest at least twice a day (morning and evening) is this normal? I know they leave at least once a day to eat and poo, but twice? Each time she is off about 15 - 20 minutes.

I've never had a broody duck, and this is my first year with ducks, so I'm still a newb at some stuff (well, ok, a lot of stuff).

Sorry if these are dumb questions

and thanks for answering anyway.

I have hens laying again as well, sort of the same deal, if you don't want to pull them to incubate then I'd let her sit. As long as she is on the nest most of the time she should be fine. Nothing can go forever without food and water! And most broodies don't want to poop in their nest!

Good luck with the eggs, keep us updated!
