Hi, i'm pretty new to having backyard hens and roosters. But I was wondering if the chicken breed I have in my backyard was a good broody chicken breed? Any suggestions on what chicken breeds are best for this.

Thanks!

The very best breeds for brooding are silkies, cochins, brahmas, and orpingtons. Faverolles are also known to be very broody. There are lots of other breeds that go broody too, though. What breeds do you have?

Marans, Sumatras, Wyandottes, Rocks and any of the game chickens, bantam or large fowl.

As a rule, if a breed is well known as a great layer, that's probably because their tendency to go broody has been largely bred out.

The breed I own is crochin, and I really appreciate this thank you. @Pyxis

Cochins are one of the broodiest breeds. Ours raised a number of broods for us. Silkies are probably the broodiest of all. They have been know to spend weeks trying to incubate a golf ball.

I read on here about a hen trying to incubate a block of wood. Broodiness must not be restricted even to round objects

Incubating thin air is also a possibility when no eggs are available for the broodiest of broodies.

LOL! Having had Silkies, I can certainly believe it.)

Game hens are the way to go, I started off with a trio 1 roo and 2 hens and in about 2 years I had over 60 chickens, there crazy broodies and almost all my pullets that came from those 2 hens became broody around 7-8 months of age.. there super great foragers and great mothers to!! but be aware they do tend to leave and hatch there chicks else were
