I know I've read that about China's before too, Terri. I can't remember where though. If it weren't for the fact that I've spent a lot of time at Lou Horton's site and know him to be a respected breeder for many decades, I wouldn't have been able to find that quote... I certainly hadn't remembered what Dave had said about it.

We've been back from South America now for 6 years. We put everything into storage before we left. I am embarrassed to say that we have a garage full of stuff that still hasn't been unpacked.

It boils down to if you breed for egg production broodyness is a negative trait since they don't lay while broody. Somrtimes you can limit negative traits, sometimes not. Parenting duties just keep the females out of egg production for a more extended period of time.

I never let my geese hatch anything, so I don't have firsthand knowledge of their parenting skills. Of course their usefulness in Watch-Dogging is unparalleled.

But the book by Rick Luttmann is great! Very funny, awesome info and stories and the illustrations make you smile.
It is unfortunately out of print, but you can find it on Amazon.

I guess it is like anything else. They "tend" to but no guarantees either way as said!

Our white and chinese geese love to be broody.....

This year I think I'll let a few more do the incubator work............

Have a blessed one.
