My d'uccle (2yrs old) and d'uccle/Sultan (1yr) hens hadn't been broody ever until last month. 1 tiny chick hatched today from a dozen or so that they've been sitting on. It appears that the 2 d'uccle/Sultans are caring for it while the other sits on the rest, although they walked away from it briefly when I came up to them - something my cochins never would have done. I've always had cochin bantams to hatch and care for chicks, and they've always been good moms (they're gone now). Are d'uccles good mothers? Should I put others that hatch in a brooder? I'm just wary since they've never been broody before.

Just went to check on them and the poor chicks were sitting out by themselves, one with a peck wound....so now they're under a heat lamp. Reluctant mothers, these d'uccles!
