I've got two Muscovies sitting on a shared nest, due to hatch over the next week. I'm worried about the eggs though, as they look very different than the ones I kept back for the incubator. I am aware that the air cell needs to be very large at this stage, the ones in the incubator do look a little small but last hatch I did the air cell grew dramatically in the last couple of days and then shrink wrapped a few ducklings. The ones under the ducks, there are at least a couple that appear to have a dark band in the middle, and two air cells? They also sound more "hollow" if they tap together, compared to the ones inside... I'll need to properly candle to make sure, but something doesn't seem right... What are some reasons for dedicated broody ducks to fail a hatch? They always have water right in the coop, and access to outside, fresh feed daily, I've been afraid to clean the coop too much, as one broke broody last time and I lost a large number of eggs because I tried to move her.
Am I just being paranoid? Is everything probably fine? Its not like its super dry here, I live in Nova Scotia, and if you are unfamiliar with the area, lets just say most weeks are pretty evenly dispersed between sunny and cloudy, and rain is something we get most weeks, and often all week. My lower yard is pretty much a soggy swamp half the time, and thats on a hill with a good grade.
No duck eggs I've looked at have been infertile yet, my Drake is very... dutiful.
