Broody, egg bound or infection

If we had a bigger place ... we would let her hatch eggs. Maybe in a couple of years if she is still up for it.
And actually I am wondering if she might be one who might not sit on her eggs enough.
She is not as obsessed as as others have mentioned broodys are.
Yes, she has many things the broodys do, sitting flat, making those noises, puffing out anytime anyone approaches, and has gotten into that trance like state, but she get gets up far more than a few minutes a day.
She might spend hours sitting and then hours foraging.

Does this mean she might not be a good broody hen .... or is she still just phasing into it?

Once she has eggs to sit on and doesn't have everyone else pecking her? She'll settle right in and only leave the nest to eat and drink! And hopefully do her dirty business on the outside of the nest! She could set on two eggs and that would be enough! It doesn't have to be a nest full! I always try to have two babies to grow up together. A single chick is reluctant to leave momma when she's done with it. And it's so lonely too when it does end up w/o a momma!

If she doesn't have eggs to sit on, then she'll continue acting goofy until she gets some! Some breeds are just more broody than others. So don't think the worst of her condition - YET!

What breed of hen are we talking about here anyway? And how old is she?

If so? I actually had one of these hens I got as a chick! Had NO clue thats what their breed was called! LOL Had her a couple of years. The new neighbor's dogs got loose and killed her, three mallard ducks and two other hens. The neighbor was heartbroken over what her dogs did. She left a note on my door with her phone number. When I called her, she was bawling. I didn't charge her much for all the pets her dogs had killed. She was more upset than I was and had even taken her dogs to a relatives place to keep them away from our flock!

When she brought me the money she couldn't stop crying. I thanked her profusely for leaving her number. Most ppl wouldn't say a word and just leave us to wonder what happened.

It seems like one of my hens is egg bound, I saw her sitting in the nest yesterday but she did not lay. Today around 5:00 PM, I saw her waddling a little and trying to poop but could not pop. She is moving around a little and taking treats but mostly trying to stay in a corner. She did not even go after the 8 weeks old chicks like she usually does.

I am going to put her in warm bath tub shortly but since BFS is closed right now, I dont have any liquid Calcium to give her. I did see her eat a lot of Oyster shells yesterday but seems like that hasn't helped. What can I buy form local pharmacy as an alternative to liquid Calcium. Any other suggestions? She is a pretty girl and I don;t want her dead. Statistics tell me she will be dead within 48 hrs.

BTW nothing has prolapsed out of her vent so far. I did see her poop some yellowish liquid that just tricked down her vent feathers.

Are you able to help her pass the egg by gloving up and using baby oil to reach inside of her? That's what I'd be doing!
Get your finger hooked behind the egg and help her push it out. I sit my girls on the edge of the sink and keep the water running on a warm temperature. I wash off the poop so I keep her booty clean!

After a hot tub treatment and a little massage, she did lay an egg and is walking around better. However, she was having trouble climbing up the coop ladder. So there is still something wrong with her. She did eat a bunch of oyster shells again, so she knows what she needs. What else can I do for her if she is still like that in the morning?

Can you put her in a cage by herself. On a bed of hay! She'll need time to heal after such a tramatic event.

Thanks TC, I brought her in for the night. She did great all day long except I noticed some extra strain while pooping and a deformed egg she laid. I will see what happens what kind of egg she lays tomorrow. If its still deformed, she must have gotten some internal injury, in that case, I will probably giver her some antibiotics for a week or so with vitamins. After that I may have to think of putting her out of her misery.

Don't throw her out in the trash! I've had hens that took over a week to get their systems back in working order again. You can look at it this way! If you've ever had a bad bile movement where you have to really strain to poop, it's kind of the same thing they go thru. We don't bounce right back from it and neither do the hens after straining so much.

I feed mine white bread everyday. It's loaded in calcium and isn't so rough on their systems. Cod Liver Oil is also a good source of Vitamin D. I give my girls crushed egg shells too. I just rinse them off real good with hot water and let dry. Then I crush them and put it outside where they can find it.

Maybe rub the inside of her booty with some vaseline to help the egg(s) come out easier?
