I have my broody sitting on some unfertile eggs separated from the rest of the flock. This morning I noticed she had kicked one off the nest, when I took it out I noticed it had been opened and the contents was gone! She must have eaten it. It was still intact except for a hole at the top so it was not stepped on and crushed. She is still happily sitting on close to a dozen eggs. Should I be concerned?

Is the door to the hutch big, because for a while magpies were flying in and either breaking and eating the contents or lifting them and flying out of the coop with them, so it might not of been the hen, also a broody hen has instincts, it can sometimes tell if an egg is fertile or not and it might of known and was checking (so ive heard) but i don't think anything will happen u should be fine.

She is completely locked away from everyone else. My nesting boxes are at my hip height and I didn't want to move her after she was sitting on the fertile eggs and I didn't want to risk babies falling so I closed in under the nest boxes with chicken wire and put up opened up feed bags up as curtains for privacy for her. She has food and water in there and about a 14'x2' area. There is no way for anyone to get in there but me :) My eggs are due to arrive tomorrow so fingers crossed she will do fine!
