Currently, I have two 2 week old chicks being raised by a broody hen who hatched them. All 3 of them are in a medium sized dog crate inside the coop. We have a rooster and another hen in the coop. What are my next steps for the chicks/hen in the crate? They already free range for short periods of time with the flock and the chickens do well with the chicks. However, mama hen and the other hen are not doing well with each other as mama hen is super protective of her babies. The rooster is awesome with the chicks and breaks up fights between the two hens. How long do I keep mama hen and chicks in the crate? At what age is it safe to leave the chicks with the rest of the flock?

I’d give it a few more weeks when the chicks get a little more independent. Keep them separate for now, but make sure they’re still able to see each other.
You can free range them all together if there is enough space for the mamma and chicks to run away from the others.

Excited to watch the chicks grow! :weeMake sure to update us with pics as they grow.
