Broody Hen day 22 and counting

If and when you think she is done sitting and you want to take the eggs, you can either coax her off the nest with food, or grab the chicks and move them to where you want the momma to follow. If she doesn't follow you on her own then just pick her up and mover her. She should stay with her chicks either penned up in the safety of the coop or the three of them can be out with the flock. I do it both ways. Some hens have the natural instinct to protect her chicks and others don't. The hens who don't protect their chicks very well are the ones that I separate from the flock until they get a few weeks older and can flee from others. You can provide the mother hen her normal feed even regardless of the chicks. She will eat what she wants and she will alert the chicks to eat the starter crumbles and any other treats you might give her.

Well of the 6 eggs she was sitting on only 2 hatched this was our first time her's and mine. The chicks hatched about 5 days from each other. So far so good, she's a great Mom and the chicks seem healthy . So far she is in a brooder on the floor of the coop and when I let the other hens out to free range she and the chicks have a few hours of freedom in the run. At this point she is aggressive towards the other girls so this is what's working for now. I'm having a great time watching as she teaches the chicks and have and picking up some chicken language at the same time.

Hi no empty nest,

I wouldn't worry about the aggression you see the mother hen exhibiting toward the other hens. The mother hen is protecting her chicks. It's natural and will subside on it's own in time. Congrats!
