Few days ago I found a pile of feathers from a chicken & she couldn't be found. I thought she was taken by a hawk. I found her today, I saw a pile of eggs under her. She was VERY broody. So I tried to pick her up when I was hit with this HORRIBLE odder! She smells, the eggs smell, everything stunk! I finally got her up & off them. She had a few feathers missing from one wing. I was putting the eggs in a bag & I had to dig 2 out of the ground. While i was digging I saw maggots & bugs but the shells where not cracked. I had to breath through my mouth it stunk SO bad!!! So she is running around all upset about the eggs & where ever she goes the stink follows her. The part of the yard where I found the eggs stunk too. So I know the eggs are rotten, so I'm putting them in a trash bag to take outside. One of the eggs hits another & the shell cracks of, but the membrane is still there & I see something weird inside. I didn't get a closer look because of the smell. My Mom thinks the smell id because of an injury, I think she layed eggs with chicks inside but then they rotted & since she was sitting on them that's why she smelled. So what could it be? And how can we get the stink off her?

IF the smell indeed is rotten egg, ... you can give her a bath with Dawn dishsoap, then do a diluted (10%) vinegar and water solution, then rinse her really well, followed by drying with a hair dryer on low - unless it's really warm out then you can just let her go. ewwwwwww...

It's probably the eggs, but definitely give her a bath and look her over. If there were maggots they could be on her somewhere and some maggots do eat living tissue as well as dead.

BARF, that would be so disgusting to come upon. You can sprinkle the ground with lime to help with the smell, just keep the chickens away from it.
