Broody hen + infertile eggs=?

Yes there’s the option of the wire but if you don’t already have a kennel I’d take a chance with a baby chick and give it back to the store it came from if it doesn’t work out or list it on kijiji or craigslist or in the byc buy and sell section. A kennel is at least $50 unless you can find a used one but chick is about $4 and you get a hen to raise it for you plus I have read hens that are allowed to raise chicks can live longer since they spend less time laying eggs. You could also buy fertilized eggs or check if the silkie eggs are fertile. I had a rooster fertilize eggs at 4 months, not sure if they can fertilize them earlier than that? But in the long run if you don’t see yourself letting every hen hatch eggs when she is broody (and having to deal with roosters that hatch) a wire bottom cage may be the better option.

I've just bought 2 sets of fertile eggs for my silkies - first lot has given me 4 lovely chicks and the 2nd is on day 2 - so 19 days to wait. They were both broody about a week before I put the fertile eggs under them so depending how long she has been sitting this could be a good option if you can source eggs quickly locally and you aren't adverse to some more chicks. Otherwise if she has been already on a couple of weeks (sorry can't remember if you said) then I'd be adding 2 or 3 chicks for her to raise :love. i'll probably only every try to break mine if I desperately can't have chicks for any reason.

I break my broodies by putting them in a tractor on the lawn every day, then seeing to it that they get back on the roost at night. It takes about 3 - 4 days. The longer a hen is broody, the longer it takes to break her.
That seems sooo much kinder than the cage - I'll keep that in mind for an extra day worth it I think!
