Ok so I don't have a broody hen right now but I still have a question. Alot of you seem to be seperating your broody hen from the flock. Is this always necessary? None of the old timers I know have done that. What is the real purpose of it? Protection or....? I'd love some info on this topic. Thanks!!!

I seperate mostly because my broody usually steals the other hens eggs... which arent fertile and they get mixed up with the ones I want to hatch. I dont have a problem with my broody getting picked on or vise versa.

I was told awhile back to separate them and put them in a cage without any bedding. Guess it's suppose to break them of the brooding. I've tried it, and it never worked for me. I let them sit in the nest and kick them out a couple of times a day to make sure they eat. To each their own. Whatever works for you.
