My nephew called me and has one chick hatched under a hen w/ more eggs.

He took the chic out and put it in the brooder and it does not want to be alone.

He is afraid it will fall out of the nest if left with hen and doesn't know how it will get food and water.

Any advice?

Put the chick back under the hen tonight! It won't fall out. The hen will do a MUCH better job of caring for it than we can possibly come close to.

Next time, tell him to move the broody to her own place where she is not off the ground. That way he won't have to worry about it falling out. Second, tell him that it won't need to eat or drink for 2-3 days as it is still feeding off of its yolk sac.

My broody is raising 3, they are one week, and flew up onto a 30" roost with her. They only need food and water for a very few days down at ground level.

Be sure he knows to feed them all starter feed. The hen will do fine on it, but the chicks will not be OK on her layer feed.

Thanks ddawn, He has raised chicks before. But I will remind him. Gail
