Ok our broody silkie is loving her some adopted chicks. They are currently, in our brooding cage, with no heat. Do I move the cage to the coop and then on nice days put them in the safe run for day and move them back to cage?

At what point are chicks safe with other hens?

Momma hens usually protect the chicks from other chickens, unless there are too many of them. That is, lots of chickens milling about when momma brings 'em out to learn how to be chickens. If she's somewhat sequestered, in a space you've set up with hiding places with access holes small enough for the chicks to dash inside, but not the adult birds.

Others may have more definitive and/or descriptive answers and suggestions.

greyeyes, I agree with everything you wrote. We have a separate wire enclosed cage for broody mama and her babies. I put them in the yard during the day only after a few weeks. Mama takes care of her babies. And then at night we put them all back in there special cage.

Oh good that is what I was hoping. She wtill sits on them almost all the time. They come in and out to eat and drink, is that normal?
