We have a broody hen at the moment sitting on 10 eggs, 3 of which are due to hatch in 4 days and the rest in 2 weeks. She has been kept in a cage within the chicken coop. Recently I noticed red mite in the coop at night so I also checked the hens for lice, none of which have any except for the broody hen so I have decided to take action. I have bought a fumigation pack for the coop and some mite and lice powder for the hen. The hen will be removed from the coop along with the other chickens while the fumigation takes place and then is ventilated, but I am wondering how long to leave it to ventilate until the hen can be put back, and also whether the powder is likely to affect the eggs under her. The powder is organic and says that eggs can continue to be eaten after use, but I'm not sure whether the eggs will go 2 weeks with the powder on the hen.

Any advice would be great
Thanks

my broodies would hatch the first batch and not the eggs 10 days later. She would give up 3 days after first chick hatches,

I would use the powder. put the broody in a box in the garage while I fumigate.

We have already got an incubator to keep the first batch of chicks in when they hatch and i will care for them so that she stays on the other 10 eggs. That's what I was thinking, thanks for the advice

My broody is looking after her 3 chicks that hatched yesterday but we have also noticed live after having to bring a chick in (long story it's back under mum now) is it save to put the powder in the house? We haven't seen any red mites x

i dont know what powder you are using. i would prefer a little sevin powder to lice in my home tough

I'll have a look at powder tomorrow and post which brand hopefully it will say on it. It's been stressful day. 3 eggs not hatched but two of them had developed :-( not sure what went wrong. 3 chicks healthy though x
