We got rid of our only australorp rooster yesterday. The hens seemed a bit distressed and quite, but one of them took it really badly. Nuisance, my australorp hen, has been laying on the nest for about an hour and a half, she never did this before, is she broody or hurt? If she is broody, why did she become broody so suddenly? Please help.

Hello, my red hen pictured here in my profile picture I believe is broody she just started this behavior 3 days ago going into the nest and sitting and sitting we have never had a rooster in our flock, can someone tell me what to do please, I have been taking her out of the nest, but to no avail she goes right back to just sit in the nest for hours on end..

Hens go broody if you have a rooster or not. Three days isn't very long, tbh, and many young pullets give up.

However, you can break her by putting her in a dog crate or something similar with no bedding. Dog crates work well because you can raise it up on wood or bricks so that her underside stays cool. It may take a few days, but I've been able to break almost all of my broodies that way.

Thank you! I’ll try that :)
