My Brown Shaver hen, Annie, could be broody - - - I cant figure out how to tell though.
She laid her egg this morning at 9.00, and is still sitting at 5.00 in the afternoon. When anyone comes near her she starts "growling" ---a really strange, elongated noise. I picked her up, got the egg, and replaced it with two plastic ones, and she's still sitting on it.

So my question would be that, if she is broody, what sort of behaviour should I expect, and how should I break it? and, if I wanted to, could I incubate eggs/possibly get her to raise chicks? She has a really sweet personality, is really gentle except when trying to get her own way.

Sounds broody, but give her a couple days first to make sure. Some hens will accept chicks...others won't. Why not just let her hatch her own rather than using the incubator?

Sounds like a good idea - - - she tries to do this everyday, and I've been collecting the eggs underneath her, as she steals the other's eggs. Thanks for the reply!
