I have a year and a half old hen who has been broody for several weeks. I don't have fertile eggs. For the past week or so I have noticed her comb is turning black. First on the tips, and now all the way down. Is this normal?
Thanks,
Dana

No this is not normal, it is a serious sign. If she's been broody for several weeks, she may not be eating and drinking enough.
Take her off the nest ASAP and place her near food, and dip her beak in cold water. If she won't eat, put some oats or sratch, or something to temp her. If she's real weak, give her raw liver, and sramble up a raw egg with some sugar. Hope she's o.k.

agree. You can put things in the nest to keep her form using it. Or boot her out of the coop and let her free range outside for a couple days (putting her back in at night)

no
She needs some antibiotics. And she needs to have the broodiness broken. You can just take her off the nest, and move her away from it to a crate for a day or two.

Are you sure she is broody and not sick? She may just be sick and sitting still from the dying comb.
