Lemon Yellow is sitting purchased eggs. Started with a dozen, she kicked some out of the nest along the way and one of the two Americanas got his/her shell crushed on day 19. Leaving 7 viable eggs.
On day 21, in driving rain, on the coldest, windiest day in years... we had one chick at noon and now have four. Another cracked the whole top off during the night and I can see an eye, there is a breathing hole but no change in many hours. She (hopefully she!) is peeping up a storm. I'm concerned that the feathers on to of her head are dry, and so is the exposed part of the outer sac. I did wrap the egg in a warm damp towel and dampen the dried membrane then returned the egg to the nest. Now hoping for the best. What is the best?????
Rubber boots and raincoat at the backdoor for my very frequent trips to the hen house...
Yellow is in one of the nest boxes. Naturally, it's the "favorite" box. Good because she got out (was pushed out) some and the as the other hens laid and kept her eggs warm... bad because she's all on her own now and crazy protective. I removed a divider and put the chick food and water in. The chicks are popping out from under her and drinking.
