I have 2 broody hens on a clutch of about 8-10 dirty eggs each. We were gone for a little over a week with my sister coming to check on and care for the chickens but she didn’t mention them sitting as she isn’t familiar with chickens aside from seeing them here at our home. I’ve never let my hens outside hatch eggs except for when we had our separate smaller coop to separate the hen that was broody. My concern now is the condition of the eggs as they crushed some and it’s smeared and dried all over the eggs. I don’t want to clean the eggs if they’re viable eggs and have chicks inside as I’ve always read and been told this is dangerous for the chick. I also believe the dirty egg is unsafe as well. Need opinions on how to handle the situation and don’t want to disturb my broody hens. This is week 2 of them sitting.

Any update on this? I have the exact same situation with my broody and am not sure what to do. I’m thinking of leaving it alone and letting nature take its course… but don’t want to make things worse

I was about to say don’t worry about it, but that last picture is icky!! Maybe after candleing them and discarding any that are not developing, prepare a new clean nest and wipe of the really dirty ones? I’m not too sure, but that’s probably what I’d do.
