It's simple...I set up the Brooder pen with feed and water and have a nest made out of shavings and straw. I pop the eggs in the nest and get the Broody Hen. I leave her about a good 30 minutes alone to settle before ever checking on her. Always setting when I check. It works great and I do it in the afternoon.
I was worried about temps as well. She hatched 8 out of 12 with over night temps going down below 30f on occasion. Most days highs were 50-60 with no supplemental heat. Day 2 the chicks were out running around with it around 40. They would just go warm up under mom then come out and run around some more.
That's funny my Momma hens name is Chicken Little!
