I have 2 Japanese bantam hens & 1 rooster. I'm not sure which are laying but within the past 5 days I have 5 eggs. How can I tell if she will sit on them to hatch them out. And how long will they be good for after she has laid them? So I don't waste them.

Alright Tracy B,

Gander 007 you have a beautiful lad. My problem is I bought them from someone and I'm not sure of their age or really anything about them. I know I should have bought chix but when I seen them I couldn't resist.I wished I knew how to post pics on here so I could show you then maybe you could tell me mor.

Picks easy enough as I think I can help you out with that one of my grandchildren showed me how several months ago ...

1. Look up at the top of your Reply page and you will see a bunch of little boxes well a couple of box's to the left of the smiley face you will see a square box with mountains that is the square you tap on and you will go to add photos well at the upper left hand corner you will see add from your computer and now when you add photos they will stay in your photo album to use later .....

Anything else just ask .....

If a hen is going broody , she will sit on the eggs and may need to be forced off in order to drink, eat and poo. Likely she will puff up her feathers and growl or peck at you, if you try to touch her eggs.

Just leaving eggs in the nest doesn't bring on broody behavior. It's a hormone thing and when it strikes you will know. Broodies will sit on rocks, golf balls, or even plain air expecting to hatch it.
If you don't have a rooster - it is impossible for any eggs to hatch.

You can learn a lot more about broodies if you put "Broody hens" in the search box.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

A hen will set on eggs when she goes broody. She will growl at you, raise her neck feathers, go sit in the nest box and not come out. They will do this without any eggs present. So you don't need to leave any eggs in the boxes. Just collect them as you normally would and when she starts to go broody, you can slip some eggs under her in the nest box.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! There are some nice articles in the Learning Center on hatching and broody hens you might like to check out https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-and-raising-chicks X2 on just collect the eggs as you normally would and store them (there is a section on storing hatching eggs in the 101 article) and give them back to her when she goes broody... if you collect up to how many eggs you want her to set on, if she lays more just replace the oldest ones with the new ones, you should still be able to eat the old ones if they are stored correctly.

Thanks everyone. All of you have been so much help. And a special thanks to gander 007 for explaining how to upload pics. Although I haven't seen a box with mountains it but I did see the upload button. I will eventually learn to navigate this site just bare with me. lol. I don't have home internet just my mobile phone. I live in the boondocks where there isn't cable & I'm on antennae & a cell phone. Its not the same as a desk top. plus I'm on a fixed income. I'm disabled but I enjoy my chickens. lol:p :)

Well don't think your alone as I am also retired and I guess that is a fixed income but there are also others out there who write about using cell phones and such but it is a different world 20 years ago when a person had to have great credit just to activate a cell phone and the rates were out there in space ...

So to you a special thanks for joining
