Broody Mama with 1 week old chicks

This is the broody that sat for 31 days on eggs that did not hatch. I put two chicks under her overnight and it "took".

This is her first time outside the pen with them after one week.

She seems so big and they so little.

adorable, I have a buff with three chicks right now. Only 3 hatched out of 14. I was very sad, but she is very happy with her 3 little ones.

You are right, at least we got some little chickies! I got mine from the only feed store that had little ones and it closed it's doors that very day. Lucky for sure. I would have hated for that girl to set on those eggs that long!

Ellie - is momma and chicks in an area by themselves or are they with other adult chickens?

I'm wondering when I should let my momma and her only chick out with the others?

Mom and babies are separate in a dog house and dog kennel (I don't even have a dog LOL). I let them out yesterday for a couple of hours while penning my free rangers. The big girls sulk a little, but don' t mind.

I just did this with four babies under my broody Lacy. I did it the same way, then let them free range all together under my supervision for an hour before bed time. Lacy and babies went to the dog house and the other girls to the coop. Then, gradually a little longer together so they would get used to each other. Then, Lacy decided to go back to the big girl coop at 4 weeks. The babies went back to the dog house. I scooped them up and took them to the coop and only had to do that for two nights. Then they all went in together.

Mom is a buff orpington and babies are plymouth barred rocks. I am praying that they are not bantams.... they seem so small.
