Broody Moody Yum Yum

We had to my male Turkey Dinner down over the winter. yum yum has started building her nest of infertile eggs. We have built up wooded pallets and have her and the nest protected. I'm the only one who can go in the carport.

I was wondering what I should do. Should I buy a couple of feritle eggs to put in with her wait till they should hatch and buy some polts to sneak in there she is so sweet and I think she would be an awesome mom. Or I do have feritle Duck eggs I could put there . Or do I just leave well enough alone?

At some point in time you will want to break her from being broody. The easiest way to break a broody is to let her hatch eggs. Since you have fertile duck eggs, it might be easiest to just give her some of them.

You didn't say whether this is a broad breasted or a heritage hen. Broad breasted hens do not make the best mothers. They just cannot move their legs with the grace and carefulness that a heritage hen does.

I had a broad breasted hen that hatched 2 goose eggs. The first hatched a day before the second and was already dead from being stepped on by the time I found it. The second one also got stepped on but was still alive when I found it. I had to rubber band its legs together in order for it to stand up. It did survive.

She is a free range Broad Breasted White. I wanted heritage but they shipped me two of the wrong ones. I got attached right away and just let them refund my money.

She is pretty good on her feet but I will pay close attention. Thanks for the heads up.

The incubators are all full so I will try and put some of the Pekin eggs in her nest and keep an extra close eye on things.
