Hello,
Hoping for some advice, we are newbies. My Cochins are about 1year old, have been laying for about 6months. We have 3 hens, no rooster. They free range in our backyard everyday. Very happy, non stressed girls. A few days ago one stayed in the coop, in the nesting box all day. I was worried that she was sick but then I lifted her out (I had to use work gloves as she did not like this and tried to peck me) and she went straight to the waterer and feeder, ate and drank and pooped immediately. She walked around very normally but after 5 minutes or so wanted to get back in the nesting box. This has been going on for 4-5 days. Broody behavior but acting normal when I make her get out. Should I just continue this? Should I close up the coop so she has to stay out? I feel a bit sad when I make her get out as she seems anxious to get back in. Is there any way to break this habit? How long does this last? Do I need to take her to a vet?
Any advice would be very appreciated!

She sounds broody to me. I do make my broodies get off the nest and walk around/eat/poo/drink when I check for eggs once a day. I have had one hen die from brooding too long.

Supposedly if you put them in a wire bottom cage for a few days with food and water it can break them of their broodiness. I have tried it for a couple of days but to no avail with some hens. So I have not had much luck breaking them. Some just give in and order hatching eggs but then your flock would grow very large quickly.

Thank you! Glad to hear your opinion that she's not sick!
