Normally I know exactly when one of my chickens is going broody, but I'm really confused about this one. Only one of my hens has ever gone broody, my BA named Rocky. She has gone broody three years in a row, so this year I gave her some chicks to raise. She has had them for over a month now. My two other adult hens have never shown any brooding behavior, nor have they been very interested in the chicks since they arrived.
Today, however, I noticed my RIR, Maisie, acting odd. She keeps going in and out of the nest boxes, making broody clucks, and making little nests in the shavings. She puffs up if I reach for her when she is in the nest boxes too. I also found a pile of four eggs in a corner of the coop, and Maisie got very upset when I removed them. The weirdest thing happened when I gave the chickens their treats. Maisie is normally very protective of her food, but today she kept pulling little bits of food out of the bowl and trying to imitate the sound Rocky makes when she finds food for the chicks. She didn't do it very well, and the chicks didn't go to her, but she tried anyway.
The reason I'm so confused about this is because Maisie is the last chicken I ever thought would go broody. She is silly, and goofy, and kind of mean, but certainly not a mother. I would never have expected someting like this from her.
Is she actually broody? Or is there something else going on?
