Hi.
I have a polish, just over a year old, who went broody about 2 months ago. I dated the eggs and let her sit. I'd read that they rarely sit and when they do they aren't very good Mothers but I thought I'd let her give it a try.
Sure enough, when her first egg hatched I found the chick thrown out of the nest. So I moved the rest of the eggs she was sitting to the incubator. I then kept the eggs in the coop picked up thinking she would give up sitting on empty nests. She hasn't.
In fact, she seems to have become a bit neurotic. I'll take her out of the nest and set her down, she'll go eat and drink but she preens, picks, ruffles her feathers, flaps her wings, squawks loudly and scrapes her beak on the ground constantly. I've bathed her in diatomaceous earth several times and see no evidence of mites. (The other chickens are fine.) She'll always return to her empty nest instead of going out into the yard.
Now the other chickens are violently attacking her. Even my rooster. I'm thinking maybe she stays on the nest because they leave her alone in the coop.
Does anyone know what's going on with her or have any suggestions how to help her?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
