Two of our pullets, both about 10 months old, have gone broody. One is a Speckled Sussex and the other is a Welsummer. For a week or so my wife was just taking the eggs from under them, but the Welsummer in particular seems very determined, so now we let her have some eggs to sit on. My wife noticed that she has picked out most of the feathers from her belly. Is that from the stress of having her eggs taken, or a normal broody thing, or is she just being weird?
I read that Welsummers don't usually go broody, and also that they don't make particularly good mothers, so we're a little unsure of whether to let this continue or if I should make a broody-breaker as described in other threads here. Any advice?
The flock includes 26 pullets of various heavy breeds, and one Delaware rooster (we had a Welsummer roo but he died recently). They are all about 9 to 10 months old.
