Broody RIR hen?... Oh no~

I may hatch some out later but not with my broody. Right now I'm going through cancer treatments and am just not up to it.

I let Ms. Broody out of jail late this afternoon. So far she hasn't went into the nest boxes and tonight went up onto the roosts.

Steve, how are you making out with Olivia?

I had to pull Olivia off the nest in the darkness last night and set her on the roost, Cmom. However, I think Olivia stayed out of the nestbox pretty much all morning . . . until Spring Chicken layed an egg in it. I found Spring on the nest, earlier.

Olivia did all the cackling over that egg (completely opposite of the way things usually happen, Spring is the noisy one and cackles for everyone). After a few minutes of noise, Olivia moved in to take over the egg but I was right behind and snatched the egg out from under her.

After an hour or so of sitting in an empty nestbox, Olivia reappeared in the backyard. Tonight, she has access to her nestbox but seems to have no intention of trying to sneak in there for the night.

Until the next "situation" - the hen house is returning to normal. This program of confining the broody up off the floor for a day or 3 seems to work for the stronger-willed hens. Here's wishing you the best of luck with Ms. Broody and all the rest

I guess some time out in the chicken jail worked. Ms. Broody hasn't started back laying yet but she is not in the nests boxes day and night.

hatching under my broody RIR was as easy as pie, she did all the work! I had heard of placing ice packs in the nest box to discourage a broody, maybe put them in at night so she doesnt sleep there. Good luck.

And my best to you with your treatments, we went thru that with my mom and my aunt in the last 2 years.

This must be the Broody season. I have had more decide to go broody. I don't have my Roo anymore and not really interested in hatching eggs so I put them in wire cages for a few days. It works. One bird has started laying but the others haven't. Also a lot of molting going on right now.

She had another couple of weeks off and then Olivia took a little while to lay a proper egg. The first 3 were softshelled but then she got it right and has been doing well ever since.

We've had a big cool down and the birds seem to be all thru with their molting. Egg production picked up a couple of weeks ago.

Here's hoping that the same comes true for your flock.

She's very lucky to have your kind concern. So long as she is keeping weight and participating in flock behavior she should be fine. Zipfi shows me her bald patch from time to time- she is very proud of having broody traits!

We have a broody Leghorn...she has broody on the brain all the time...no eggs she just wants to have chicks.Funny though she can't read the book that Leghorns don't go broody but she can count her chicks(try taking one away and see)
