So a co-worker of mine has a broody silkie. She is proudly sitting atop her (and her coop mate's) eggs, in a pile of litter (pine bedding) ON THE FLOOR!.

There is one next box on the wall of the coop (which she shares with 5 other hens and one rooster) but she choose to nest on the floor, instead. The coop is not insulated, but has heat lights.

The question is, should she move the broody to a nest box, or leave her where she is? She has been sitting for 10-14 days.

She could possibly be moved, but I would more likely put a cage or something over her, if she just feels the need to keep her contained.

I've had plenty of broodies set and hatch on the floor with no issues, though.

Thanks, Asher.
We were talking tonight, and the reason she wants to move her to a box is so she can move mom and babies inside to her basement where it's warm.

On a side note, I am trying to convince her to join BYC!

Sure she can be moved, but do it in the dark and with as little stress on her as possible. She does need her own private place to prevent other hens from adding new eggs, or the rooster from messing with her. Make her a nest in a small cage. I`ve noticed over the years that temps aren`t nearly as important as privacy..........Pop
