I have a broody hen, and I am trying to decide whether to let her hatch me some eggs. I know nothing about what it takes. She is currently brooding in the nest box but I have a wired off section in the corner of the coop I would put her in. So what are the "rules"? Do I need to take her off once a day until they hatch? Do I need to do anything special when they hatch? My biggest problem is I am going away in three weeks. Do I need to be on hand constantly when she is broody and hatching? Tell me about the process of broody hens.

She can manage it all on her own. She needs the nest box to be on the floor, food and water. No need to take her off of the nest once a day. She will eat and drink. Putting a fence around her to keep others away is nice. Use small wire that the babies can't get through. If you are away just make sure that a raccoon can't get to her and the babies. She might want to make a new nest away from the one that she hatches the babies in a few days after the hatch so you could provide extra straw in her pen.

Great! I read from start to finish details on the homestead website. It was exactly what I needed!
How long do you keep the momma and babies separate from the rest of the flock? Can the babies go in with the adults once the momma quits taking care of them?
