My broody hatched 10 chicks and had been a devoted, fierce mother up until today. Chicks are nine weeks old and I’ve been letting Mama Sith and her brood free range successfully with the rest of the flock every day for the past week. They are in their own coop at night.
Tonight when I gathered themthe broody kept attacking just one of the chicks. It’s a healthy little cockerel and ironically the only one that is actually hatched from HER egg.
I rescued him from her and put him in the other coop. The adult flock began chasing him so I figured out finally that he had to go back to his siblings and Mama Sith could go back with the adults in their coop. She’s ticked off and yelling for her chicks, but I’m guessing it’s separation time.
She only attacked this one chick, though. Isn’t that weird? Has anyone else experienced this?
