broody

Gamefowl hens are great at setting and are extremely protective of their chicks.

X2 on sourland. Silkies are wonderful brooders and mothers but they are bantams. Gamefowl hens are probably the best standard sized brooders and mothers. Cochins are also very good brooders and mothers.

Asil are not as common as silkies but are just as broody as a silkie and way more capable of protecting their chicks. I find the Asil to be preferable to American Game or standard OEG because the latter are very keen on encouraging chicks to fly up to roost as soon as they are four weeks old, fine for chicks of their own breeding but can prove disastrous when used to raise other chicks. While Asil hens can fly quite well they will nest with their chicks as long as needed.
