Broody?

How can one know if a hen is broody, I'm guessing they will lay that last day then set and not get up- so if the hens are laying and leaving they are not broody, correct?

I mean to let them set if they are broody because of chicks.

That's about the long and the short of it

The broody will not get out of bed in the morning, and she will fluff herself up if you go to stroke her, maybe even growl.
Apparently some are even quite aggressive.
I have 2 broodies at the moment, and I am not a person who likes to carry chickens around. They would both rather be picked up than get up.
Also as soon as on of the others has laid, the broody will go and get it and sit on it.

Think you need to make sure they drink because the body temp goes up, and I like to be sure that they eat a little bit too. My silie cross has been broody for 4 weeks now and she has lost quite a bit of weight...

I have 2 right now too. Fuffy is right. My girls will also "cluck,cluck,cluck,cluck....." almost the whole time when off the nest. And will all of a sudden make a bee line right back to the box and hunker down.
