i have a black sexlink hen that is free range. and i have 2 other buff brahma hens out with her, they all lay their eggs in the same place which i haven't been collecting because i want one of my hens to go broody there are about 10-12 eggs right now and my black sex-link hen will go and sit on them for about 1-2 hours then get off of them and continue on with her day.when she is on them she acts broody, her feathers get all fluffed up,and she looks like a zombie when she is on them. she doesn't peck at me or make any noises at me when i try to grab an egg. she arranges the eggs and everything but only stay on them for about an hour and a half.
what do i do? i want her to go broody but i dont know what she is doing. i know they are not a broody-type chicken but i am not sure.

She may be contemplating it, or she could just be a slow fussy layer....

Have you tried fake eggs in the box? I have an Ancona hen that has went broody and she did the same thing as your sex link...and my hen was supposed to be one of those that rarely if ever went broody.. It took her almost two weeks to go full on... She is now into day 8 and is a bear with anything or anyone coming close to her :)

My BR hen has been doing the same thing for the past 2 weeks. She is on them for an hour or two during the day, and then all night. I wish she would make up her mind. :/

Good news! My white crested blue polish hen just went broody! she is growling at me and pecks at me when i touch under her. i am so exited! when they hatch i am going to move her to an a frame pen that has closed off area that i will close them off at night.

GRRRRRRRRRR. she got off the nest!!!! good thing i have an incubator. the eggs are very dirty. they are covered in poo,and when i say covered i mean covered. can i clean them? i know not to rub aggressively. but i think i should get the acces poo off. suggestions? i have incubated eggs before but the eggs have never been that dirty.

you can try to lightly scrape the poop off but it may be easier to just start over in your incubator

good luck
