I just hatched a chick from a brown egg that was fertilized by a maran rooster. The breed of the mama could be coronation sussex, Rhode Island reds, buff orpingtons, silver laced Wyandotte’s, or barred rock.
It's got me thinking --- what color egg would a hen of this mix lay? would it be dark brown, light brown of somewhere between?
